Until now, Special Type Test System (STTE) integrators and General Purpose ATE (GPATE) suppliers have designed their system by using commercial general purpose instrumentation. This, at times, forced the customer to accept more complex COTS instruments than what was needed to perform simpler stimulus and measurement analysis; essentially, buying more expensive instruments where only 10% of their functions were needed. Routing and connecting signals to the UUT is also a critical part of such systems, but is often left out of the standard commercial backplane offers, whether VXI, PXI or LXI. System power, general architecture, wiring and fixturing often leave the user with the dilemma of a difficult choice: take the cost-effectiveness of the STTE giving up generality of applications, or paying much more for a powerful GPATE?
